Kalita Records (once again!) prevail with this 1976 LP from South Carolina-based Gospel/Soul/Disco outfit Al Dos Band. Most importantly, it holds the title track, which is a truly holy-grail gospel soul single that fetches insane money for original copies. Of the nine tracks, a whopping seven are entirely unreleased, downright funky and danceable gospel bangers. Reissued from the analogue master rapes and released under the supervision of the bands founding members, this incredible release also features archival images and deep conversational liner notes. Far out!
Ghanaian highlife guitar legend Ebo Taylor teams up again with Strut for a long overdue definitive compilation of his seminal 1970s recordings. During Ghana's highlife explosion during the 1950s and '60s, Ebo Taylor made his name as a prolific composer, arranger and frontman in bands before studying music in London alongside Fela Kuti. He returned and in the 70s started exploring unique jazz fusions and borrowed elements from regional Ghanaian folk music, Afrobeat, jazz, soul and funk. This comp revisits his classics and some of his lesser-known side projects. Includes rare photos, original album artwork and sleeve notes by Soundway Records' Miles Cleret.
Heavy African rhythms meet American soul-funk grooves on this Afro-Funk classic! This super-rare album boasts an all-star lineup of top funk instrumentalists playing alongside Buari, most notably the funky drumming legend Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie who holds the groove so well you'd think he was an AI. This killer is just as much a sticky record on the old-school b-boy/breaking scene as it has been a diggers delight (search Kenny Dope's twist on 'Advice From Father').
Another fantastic Isle of Jura official reissue, straight from the DAT tapes! This time, an off-the-wall Dub album from 1995. While rooted in Dub, the various artists Italian, Armenian and Russian heritage influenced this record with Tango and Bossa Nova through the Dub and Reggae styles. Wicked.
Larry Heard's late 80s and early 90s work has endless and deserved praise heaped on it, so it's great to see some of the Chicagoan's slightly later work getting its deserved roses with this reissue. First released in 1996, Alien finds Heard exploring his sci-fi influences in deep styles of blunted hip-hop, twinkling ambience and Detroit techno-influenced melodic downtempo beats among moments of Heard's iconicly immersive and warm deep house. Trust Heard on this one and let him fly you off into space...
