Written after a trip home to Swaziland, now known as eSwatini, the Brownswood Future Bubblers artist Sydney recorded the sounds of life there after completing studies of sonic signatures and comparison of traditional instruments around the world. Oozing with an authentic and rich atmosphere, Sydney has crafted seven deep and spiritual cuts with indigenous percussion, tumbling drums and rich spoken word samples. Broken beats with drifting sax lines, horizontal deep house and jazzy hip-hop all contribute to making this an ode to a special place, and people. BIG recommend!
Into The Deep Records travel back in time to unearth four tracks from Genuine, originally released in 1997. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of this project, 'Nu Ambient Grooves' is the ultimate trip for downtempo, IDM and TB-303 lovers. Icy!
First-ever vinyl collection of Nils Frahm's 2018 'Encore' series, a stiring trilogy of EPs exploring the vast sound of Frahm. Listened to in sequence, it sees the German pianist and composer offer up solo acoustic pieces for piano and harmonium (tracks 1 to 5), before layering piano and field recordings across sublime ambient tracks (6 to 9). Frahm flips the script entirely on the back third, working almost exclusively with modular and analogue synths and electronically processed voices. Up there with his best work!
One of the most dedicated, consistent outfits in the contemporary Balearic scene, Coyote returns with their sixth album, a beautiful collection of open-hearted grooves for sunny days. The scope is broad; from minimal acid wiggles to New Age reveries, all dusted with a consistent 80s flavour that they've come to be known for. Incredibly charming and lovingly assembled work. Big one!
Hot on the heels of his debut EP on Mathew Hallsall's Gondwana Records, saxophonist and flautist Chip Wickham is back with a gorgeous full-length. Wickham is a member of the first Gondwana Orchestra and was on Halsall's debut LP Sending My Love, but now he steps out with a sound that is all his own on Cloud 10. It's lush and spiritual, with mellifluous keys draped over gentle drums and heart-aching sax solos reaching truly emotional highs. Gorgeous, life-affirming stuff from this modern great. Tip!
Los Angeles-based bassist and regular Sam Gendel collaborator Sam Wilkes teams up with like-minded friends to build on the dizzying funk of 'One Theme' and shuttle it into lively prog-jazz territory. Synth-blasted, improv nu-jazz sunshine that's part Carlos Niño, part Quincy Jones, part Tortoise and part Dilla. Tip!
Analog Africa's latest must-have release focuses on the little-known musical culture of the Para state on Northern Brazil, specifically the port city of Belem. Since the 1960s the city's musicians have been serving up unique and exciting new styles that draw as much on West African, Cuban and Caribbean music as they do the rhythms and instrumentation of the Amazonian tribes based nearby. Think heavy bass, bouncy ska-style rhythms, punchy Afro-Cuban horns, densely layered drums, celebratory vocals and tropical guitars. Context is provided via the included 24-page booklet, whose extensive liner notes track the development of Para's unique musical culture. Incredible compilation!
After a few mega EP's, Kokoroko finally deliver their expansive and rich debut release on Giles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings label. Incredibly joyous compositions that beg to be heard live pull oodles of inspiration from the highlife and jazz sounds of West Africa, the Afrobeat and psych-funk sounds of the 70s and plenty of modern broken beat styles that have been perfected in their home city of London. Guaranteed to brighten up your day. Stunner! LTD edition on beaut blue vinyl.
The first-ever compilation to focus on the phenomenon of ‘Burger Highlife', a blending of West African melodies with synthesizers, disco and boogie that took over Ghanaian airwaves from the 80s. Loaded with critical tracks and obscure gems, this is as much a historical artefact as it is a must-have for DJs and music lovers.
Originally released in 1980 on the Alberika label, Orchestre Les Volcans du Benin Vol. 1 has long been a 'holy grail' LP for Afro-Cuban aficionados. It now sees its first official reissue on Acid Jazz Records, with four infectious tracks across the two sides, including Oya Ka Jojo - Latin dancefloor dynamite and a DJ must-have. Remastered by Nick Robbins at Sound Mastering and presented in a wonderful colour sleeve, it's an opportunity to finally own this special and highly sought-after LP. Afro-Cuban music is some of the most infectiously joyous music out, do yourself a solid on this one!
Inspired by the quieter times of COVID lockdowns, Jamie Odell AKA Jimpster delivers his seventh album, this time returning to his roots with a string of gorgeous downtempo grooves. Like a hot choccy on a Winter's night, this Jimpster release is a warming, comforting and wonderfully luscious trip through trip-hop, neo-soul, nu-jazz, ambient and blunted beats. Lovely stuff for the sofa!
cktrl aka Bradley Miller is a key player in London’s pioneering musical underground, especially here on London's fast-rising label Touching Bass. cktrl plays heartfelt clarinet and saxophone-led soundscapes spurred on by "overpowering feelings of heartbreak" and a desire to push left-field Black music, and in doing so establishes himself as one to watch in the contemporary-classical music scene. One of the last OG DJs on NTS, he's also collaborated with Sampha, Sango and Dean Blunt. Gorgeous stuff.
Invisible City Editions reissue (with booklet) a totally stunning Spiritual Jazz LP by D.C native Jeff Majors. A combination of gorgeous harp and kalimba (thumb piano) playing, drum machines, synth lines and vocal layers. Includes a serene cover of John Lennon's 'Let It Be'! Fun fact, Jeff was one of Alice Coltrane's students at the Ashram and played in Brother Ah's band! Beautiful release!
A must-own for lovers of 80s 'cool' and anyone with even a passing interest in Brazillian music, with Cali-soaked bops, dancefloor heat and everything in between. One of Valle's biggest in his post-USA releases where he brought home the American soul, funk and boogie of its era. Legendary Brazil producers Lincoln Olivetti & Robson Jorge credited on keyboards and guitar and USA soul icon Leon Ware on backing vocals and a co-writer! ESSENTIAL LP!
Sudi Wachspress AKA Space Ghost has been on an absolute tear lately, dropping the outstanding Dance Planet LP on Tartelet last year and following it up with Private Paradise on Pacific Rhythm earlier this year. Rewinding the clock a little, this time he takes up back to Dance Planet for a remix package. Five biggies of squeaky-clean, deep, bouncy, digi-dub goodness. Come on a wicked pink marbled vinyl!
Since taking on the Local Artist alias in 2013, Ian Wyatt has perfected a particularly hazy, opaque, blissed-out and loved-up take on deep house. On 'Expanding Horizons', his first full album as Local Artist, Wyatt more than delivers on the eclecticism promised by the title, variously turning his hand to Sade style 'quiet storm' (the wonderful title track), dub-flecked, soft-focus deep pop ('Without You'), atmospheric ambient ('Neo Wise'), bongo-rich early morning soundscapes ('Rif Kidbani'), vocoder-sporting nods to Tangerine Dream ('Self Healing'), sunrise-ready downtempo disco ('Distance Calling') and touchy-feely, street soul-influenced yacht rock ('Give You My Love'). A quietly brilliant and peaceful record. Sensational.
A prolific music and SFX worker for film and TV for four decades, MJ Lallo is an unknown gem. As a creator of music and soundscapes for so many others, she rarely put out pieces of her own... Séance Centre has delivered this big remaster with three tracks of late-night boogie, cosmic synths, and drum machines. On the flip, a cosmic meditation... Big tip!
