"Great dance music albums – albums that sound as good on headphones and home speakers as they do on club soundsystems – aren’t easily made. In a form whose primary aims have been to move dancefloors and to move on, full lengths that thrill the head, heart and the feet with equal power are few and far between. We believe Romare has made one." - Ninja Tune

By the 80s, 'Fusion' had become pretty gimmicky in the minds of Jazz players thanks to a trend of boring and undercooked eternal noodling on guitars and pianos. Thankfully, Brazilian trio Azymuth have always kept this combination of jazz and rock 'fusion' alive, even on this lesser discussed 1986 release. Rooted in the groove of Ivan Conti's drumming, it's a sweet record of uplifting, soft Brazillian jazz with some playful drum machine and synth workouts. Ripper.
Brian and Roger Eno have their own hugely accomplished legacies in music - Brian as a polymath producer and artist, and Roger as a composer. Now the brothers have pooled their talents into their first collaborative album, Mixing Colours, which has taken shape over a 15-year period. Roger would record piano parts in MIDI to send to his older brother for processing, resulting in a mass of work that they eventually whittled down to this exquisite collection. Fans of both artists will be immensely satisfied, as the fusion of classical piano composition and adventurous ambient electronics merge for an engaging, hypnotic listening experience.
Los Angeles-based bassist and regular Sam Gendel collaborator Sam Wilkes teams up with like-minded friends to build on the dizzying funk of 'One Theme' and shuttle it into lively prog-jazz territory. Synth-blasted, improv nu-jazz sunshine that's part Carlos Niño, part Quincy Jones, part Tortoise and part Dilla. Tip!
At just 12 years old, Shelby befriended DJ's Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles while studying the lovin' lyrics of Prince and Marvin Gaye and then went on to write love notes for all the boys in his high school which made a killing. Cut to 1987, and this two-tracker is released and cemented in Chicago dance history. On the A, effortlessly propulsive house rhythms, salsa-tinged bassline, and dreamy strings fuse magnificently with Shelby's steamy, Prince-esque verse. On the B is a woozy and jackin' tribute to Ron Hardy, Shelby's formative influence. Also includes a postcard with lyrics! Dark Entries do the lord's work here with this ESSENTIAL reissue...
