Jazz Room Records big boss Paul Murphy reissues another obscure, hard-to-find and sought-after Latin jazz album of the highest order! This time, a glorious New York fusion of salsa, Latin jazz, boogaloo and funk most famous for the two-part 'Suite Gauracho' - a piano-popping, flute-laden affair that has become a favourite of both Balearic and nu-jazz DJs. Big chunes for the Jazz dancers!
Written after a trip home to Swaziland, now known as eSwatini, the Brownswood Future Bubblers artist Sydney recorded the sounds of life there after completing studies of sonic signatures and comparison of traditional instruments around the world. Oozing with an authentic and rich atmosphere, Sydney has crafted seven deep and spiritual cuts with indigenous percussion, tumbling drums and rich spoken word samples. Broken beats with drifting sax lines, horizontal deep house and jazzy hip-hop all contribute to making this an ode to a special place, and people. BIG recommend!
Kalita Records (once again!) prevail with this 1976 LP from South Carolina-based Gospel/Soul/Disco outfit Al Dos Band. Most importantly, it holds the title track, which is a truly holy-grail gospel soul single that fetches insane money for original copies. Of the nine tracks, a whopping seven are entirely unreleased, downright funky and danceable gospel bangers. Reissued from the analogue master rapes and released under the supervision of the bands founding members, this incredible release also features archival images and deep conversational liner notes. Far out!
Habibi Funk co-founder Jannis Stuertz first came across this record that he called "the Holy Grail of Sudanese funk" while browsing eBay a while back. Interest piqued, he went to Sudan and tracked down these musicians whose ridiculously rare LP was selling for thousands of pounds online. Some four years later, Stuertz's wish to reissue the record has finally come through. It was originally recorded in Kuwait in 1980 and brilliantly joins the dots between American funk, soul and rhythm and blues, traditional Sudanese vocals and rhythmic arrangements, and even a dash of Congolese soukous. Wow.
Heavy African rhythms meet American soul-funk grooves on this Afro-Funk classic! This super-rare album boasts an all-star lineup of top funk instrumentalists playing alongside Buari, most notably the funky drumming legend Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie who holds the groove so well you'd think he was an AI. This killer is just as much a sticky record on the old-school b-boy/breaking scene as it has been a diggers delight (search Kenny Dope's twist on 'Advice From Father').
