As with its predecessor, DJ Harvey's second outing offers a giddy skip through the dustier corners of his notoriously eclectic and off-kilter record selection. He offers up chiming, synth-heavy Balearic classics (Mandy Smith, Hugh Mane), wacky Euro-disco (Marta Acuna), evocative electronic soundscapes (System Olympia), blue-eyed synth-pop (Pamela Nivens), drum machine-powered Middle Eastern madness (Switchdance's sublime "Arabian Ride") and a swathe of tasty contemporary cuts (Aus's jazz-funk unit Midlife, Das Komplex's ace "Slap", Nu Guinea's splendid "Je Vulesse" and Peaking Lights remix of Land of Light being the highlights). German painter and musician Günther Beckers's 1982 album (a companion to his then-painted works) is given a second life from reissue kings, Music From Memory. Using a technique called Kunstkopf, two microphones are mounted in mannequin ears to create a highly immersive 3D audio experience designed for headphone listening, hence the title. With only 500 copies printed originally, Günter's beautiful minimalist variations circle around an acoustic guitar, synth, rhythm box and wordless, haunting vocals.
Soundway Records re-issue of the massively in-demand Soca cover version of Sade's classic cut "Sweetest Taboo" by Caribbean band Rebels from 1986. In the late 80s, as electronic music permeated popular culture, Rebles helped define the soca genre outside of the Caribbean. The group were the 1980s house band for mega NYC-based Caribbean label, Strakers Records, who released hundreds of Calypso and Soca tracks from 1970 to 2000. HUGE ONE!
After 15 successful years, Spanish new wave artist Juan Alberto Arteche Guel left his band to experiment with new ideas. He bought a four-track reel-to-reel recorder, and began exploring imaginary global music worlds with a core of like-minded adventurers. Finis Africæ was born, and across 18 years and 7 albums, the best cuts have been compiled here. Deeply influenced by African music, Juan blended modern electric instruments with traditional acoustic instruments from many cultures to create reverberant, organic minimal funk, new wave compositions. INCREDIBLE stuff.
Mychaal Fisher AKA MMYYKK makes his Rhythm Section debut with an EP of Prince-style purple funk, jazz, hip-hop, R&B and classic electrofunk, giving off nods to D'Angelo and Stevie Wonder's soul sound. The results speak for themselves, with Fisher - in cahoots with a wealth of collaborators from around the world - remaining front and centre throughput thanks to his own emotive lyrics and smooth-as-butter lead vocals. Limited yellow marbled vinyl on this bad boy too!
