'Installation View: Photography Exhibitions in Australia (1848-2020)' offers a significant new account of photography in Australia, told through its most important exhibitions and modes of collection and display.

From colonial records to contemporary art, the book presents a chronology of rarely-seen installation views from both well-known and forgotten exhibitions, along with a series of essays that tell the story of the individuals and institutions that have proved intrinsic to the public circulation of photographs.

At once specific and widely contextual in its scope, this long-term research project from two of Australia’s leading academics and educators in the field enriches our understanding of the diversity of Australian photography by looking at what lies beyond the frame. Installation View speaks not only to pictures but to the people and the places that nurture them.

A rare document of the 1960s Black Arts Movement featuring Albert Ayler, Amiri Baraka, Milford Graves, Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor and many more, The Cricket fostered critical and political dialogue for Black musicians and writersEdited by poets and writers Amiri Baraka, A.B. Spellman and Larry Neal between 1968 and 1969, and published by Baraka’s New Jersey–based JIHAD productions around the time of the Newark Riots, this experimental music magazine ran poetry, position papers and gossip alongside concert and record reviews and essays on music and politics. The publication emerged from the heart of a political movement―“a proto-ideology, akin to but younger than the Garveyite movement and the separatism of Elijah Mohammed,” as Spellman writes in the book’s preface―and aimed to reunite advanced art with its community, “to provide Black Music with a powerful historical and critical tool” and to enable avant-garde Black musicians and writers “to finally make a way for themselves.” This publication gathers all issues of the magazine with an introduction by poet and scholar David Grundy.
2022Hand-painted acrylic screen print on wooden panel40 x 30cmThom Stuart is a Kabi Kabi and Jinibara Country (Caloundra) based Artist, and his work references a mix of botanical motifs, found marks and surface textures in both natural and artificial colour scapes, to create a language that reflects the contemporary Australian landscape.Thom uses a mix of traditional and urban painting approaches and print-making and drawing techniques to create meaningful work with an inherent underlying visual beauty. His large-scale murals extend and abstract visuals are uncovered in his studio practice. The references to the semi-abstract scapes of natural and built environments often echo the surrounding spaces, creating a dialogue between project and place.
2017Acrylic on canvas20 x 25cmPippa Makgill is a New Zealand-born, Australian-based painter and sculptor. Pippa's work addresses the idea of shifting materiality, and the presence of the 'formless' within space. She often applies the concept of 'fluidity' to her work - capturing gesture within static mediums - and is deeply compelled by edges and how they can pull on the body's sensual gauge of sight, surface and form.
