Since taking on the Local Artist alias in 2013, Ian Wyatt has perfected a particularly hazy, opaque, blissed-out and loved-up take on deep house. On 'Expanding Horizons', his first full album as Local Artist, Wyatt more than delivers on the eclecticism promised by the title, variously turning his hand to Sade style 'quiet storm' (the wonderful title track), dub-flecked, soft-focus deep pop ('Without You'), atmospheric ambient ('Neo Wise'), bongo-rich early morning soundscapes ('Rif Kidbani'), vocoder-sporting nods to Tangerine Dream ('Self Healing'), sunrise-ready downtempo disco ('Distance Calling') and touchy-feely, street soul-influenced yacht rock ('Give You My Love'). A quietly brilliant and peaceful record. Sensational.

Where Sydney’s previous Black Acre outing focussed on Swaziland, his ‘Paraíso / Dahlia’ double-header looks to South America for inspiration in two cuts of bustling breakbeat intricacy and lithe, live instrumental chops, including the balmy B-side starring a delicious warm breeze of a vocal. One for the acid jazz daddios. Big tip!
Following up the much-hyped Rhum Derange 7” Caravan’s third outing on Planet Trip is a ride through the cosmic wormhole. Always adept at translating past eras with meticulous production and a modern flair, Paul Jextra takes in the sounds of 90s afro-cosmic, acid and deep downtempo for his most club-ready record to date. The EP is five end-to-end acidulated triiips complete with middle eastern rhythms, synth squelch and subbass pressure; primed to rattle bass heads and melt minds. Biggie!
