The dominant 80s & 90s UK genre 'Street Soul' is having a real moment of late, and Heels & Souls continue to contribute with this standalone album from Secret Touch. 29 years on, this largely forgotten album is as warm as ever, full of lo-fi charm, unashamedly positive messages and a nice mix of low-slung grooves and upbeat shufflers. TIP!
Mychaal Fisher AKA MMYYKK makes his Rhythm Section debut with an EP of Prince-style purple funk, jazz, hip-hop, R&B and classic electrofunk, giving off nods to D'Angelo and Stevie Wonder's soul sound. The results speak for themselves, with Fisher - in cahoots with a wealth of collaborators from around the world - remaining front and centre throughput thanks to his own emotive lyrics and smooth-as-butter lead vocals. Limited yellow marbled vinyl on this bad boy too!
Originally released in 1980 on the Alberika label, Orchestre Les Volcans du Benin Vol. 1 has long been a 'holy grail' LP for Afro-Cuban aficionados. It now sees its first official reissue on Acid Jazz Records, with four infectious tracks across the two sides, including Oya Ka Jojo - Latin dancefloor dynamite and a DJ must-have. Remastered by Nick Robbins at Sound Mastering and presented in a wonderful colour sleeve, it's an opportunity to finally own this special and highly sought-after LP. Afro-Cuban music is some of the most infectiously joyous music out, do yourself a solid on this one!
Born in Rio in 1940, Helio won his first guitar from his father at age 12. He worked in sugar mills and as a sales clerk in record stores while beginning to play at Rio nightclubs. In 1975 he signed to RCA Victor, where he released his first LP, 'Matheus Segundo Matheus'. A stunning blend of jazz, funk, MBP, and quiet folk ballads, the album had a staggering 128 musicians contributing to the overall recordings, and he went on to play as a support for Azymuth for a period too. Unfortunately, he never lived to see this reissue by Athens Of The North, but they have certainly done it justice. A perfect Brazillian LP to play from start to finish.
