Soundway Records re-issue of the massively in-demand Soca cover version of Sade's classic cut "Sweetest Taboo" by Caribbean band Rebels from 1986. In the late 80s, as electronic music permeated popular culture, Rebles helped define the soca genre outside of the Caribbean. The group were the 1980s house band for mega NYC-based Caribbean label, Strakers Records, who released hundreds of Calypso and Soca tracks from 1970 to 2000. HUGE ONE!
Insane boogie fire from Rio circa 82; both Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti were already decorated before they joined forces, but this one took both of their reputations and amplified them beyond expectation. Their one and only album, it's loaded with soul and funk from every corner of Brazil's sexy city and brought together with beautiful attention to detail; the gradual vocal breakdowns, rude synths and lavish instrumental sections, key cuts such as the Wonder-level "Aleluia", the jazz slides and glides of "Pret-A-Porter" and the sexy 80s electro boogie "Squash" will still completely flip any party 35 years later. Stunning.
A long overdue official compilation of Nigeria's hottest Afro-Funk outfit by Soundway Records! Forming originally as an Army band, The Funkees went on to record the grooviest rock music Nigeria had ever seen. 16 tracks spanning their five biggest mid-70s years are offered here plus a full interview with original member Sonny Akpan, who still lives in Nigeria. Essential Afro music!
