Jorge Ben's first full-length record, this 1963 release contains the hit singles "Mas Que Nada" and "Chove Chuva" and exemplifies the light yet propulsive rhythms that kept Ben in a decades-long career in Brazilian pop. Full of big-band sway with sweeping Bossa Nova touch and lively choruses, it's fantastic to track Ben here as he evolved into more rock and Afro-percussive ballads. An incredibly enjoyable listen from the young superstar.
Analog Africa presents an incredible compilation of some of the wildest experimental Afro-Caribbean psychedelia ever produced. This story is of one man’s bizarre odyssey into Colombia’s coastal music underground, and the wild, hypnotic sounds he helped bring to the surface. Described (and seen in the mad covers) as "the B-Movies of Colombian music", these seventeen tracks of avant-garde Columbian recordings sound like little else recorded before or since.
Los Angeles-based bassist and regular Sam Gendel collaborator Sam Wilkes teams up with like-minded friends to build on the dizzying funk of 'One Theme' and shuttle it into lively prog-jazz territory. Synth-blasted, improv nu-jazz sunshine that's part Carlos Niño, part Quincy Jones, part Tortoise and part Dilla. Tip!
