MAJOR TIP! 17 varied re-works of classic Funkadelic cuts from Detroit's top producers across three slabs of wax... Highlights come thick and fast, from the deep house/P-funk fusion of Alton Miller's take on "Get Your Ass Off and Jam" and Andres' loose, hip-hop influenced revision of "Music For My Mother", to the thrusting loops and heady late-night hypnotism of Anthony Shake Shakir and T-Dancer's version of "Standing on the Verge". While many of the versions stay relatively faithful to the original, the more "out-there" interpretations - see BMG's outer-space ambient dub of "Maggot Brain" and Moodymann's epic revision of "Cosmic Slop" - are also consistently impressive. Yesss to this!
This stunning conceptual release from Music From Memory's more left-field sibling label, Second Circle, is framed around how the lunar cycle affects plant growth. South American and Afro-Latin rhythms meld into deep percussive workouts wrapped in electronic jilts and vocal fragments. TIP!!
Other Lands aka Gavin L. Sutherland delivers a stunning second LP with long-time pals Athens Of The North. Gavin's concept was to create something that worked equally in the wilds of the Western Isles and in the sunnier spots of the world that we often yearn for. In playing with the idea of groups of islands, of archipelagos the world over, it became about people experiencing isolation individually, while still feeling a sense of community with those of shared experience. Using synths, drum machines and layered loops and tones, the result is a beautiful, spontaneous, timeless and honest meditation on what it is to be at once both alone and part of a larger whole.
German electronic music duo Session Victim seems to not be slowing down, having appeared on Rhythm Section, Toy Tonics and now Night Time Stories. A lighter touch is applied here, from gently swaying Balearic grooves, cosy deep-house gems, lush instrumentals and complex jazzy beats. Tip!
Gloriously free-spirited ambient jazz scapes from electronic artist Photay and jazz maestro Carlos Niño. Themed around flowing water, this finely tempered outpour of energy mixes synth, sax, harp, keys, percussion and voice into a gridless mesmerising fluidity. Potent and very special work!
