Dane Lovett’s flower paintings both embrace and eschew their historical, thematic and allegorical roots. Dark, often monochromatic and subtly tonal in their palette, the scores of works that populate the Melbourne-based artist’s debut book 'Flowers' gestures towards the syntaxes of minimalism and seriality as resolutely as they do the still life. Where earlier works saw the artist construct still life arrangements from indoor plants and pop-cultural ephemera (VHS cassettes, vinyl records, CDs, ageing tech and the like) Lovett’s recent practice has seen him embrace repetition and delicate variation, with an unmistakably reductionist and art historical bent. Here, he recasts French artist Henri Fantin-Latour’s 1864 still life Flowers: Tulips, Camellias, Hyacinths in countless murky, monochromatic iterations – a single vase of flowers becoming a site for sustained painterly exploration, variation and rhythm. Extended series of foxgloves and waterlilies in various unnatural tones follow. As the curator and academic Rosemary Forde writes in her essay for the book, Lovett’s repetitions ‘each seem to emote uniquely’, his dark and muddy images allowing us to project ‘our own familiar scenes, moments, memories, aspirations, sorrows’. 104 pages29 x 22cmSection-sewn perfect bindSoftcoverPerimeter Editions (Naarm).
Assembling a Black Counter Culture is a general history of techno and adjacent electronic music genres, with a focus on Black experiences in industrialised labour systems. It confidently explores the development of on-the-ground culture in relation to a uniquely American art form.Revisiting Detroit’s techno roots through the 1980s, writer and musician DeForrest Brown, Jr. follows the extended thinking and techniques behind key early players and places them in conversation with the African-American working class in the historically emblematic Motor City. From The Belleville Three to today’s international club floor, 'Assembling a Black Counter Culture' illuminates the mechanics of American mainstream cultural production and reinstates electronic music from a Black theoretical perspective.A critical reconsideration emerges with references to Theodore Roszak’s Making of a Counter Culture, writings by African-American autoworker and political activist James Boggs, and the 'techno rebels' of Alvin Toffler’s Third Wave, among others, tracing parallels between movements in Black electronic music and attempts to evade and subvert the race and class-essentialist status quo established by American technocratic distribution of labor and capital.128 pages, 17.5 x 10.5 cm, softcover, Primary Information (New York).
2022Hand-painted acrylic screen print on wooden panel40 x 30cmThom Stuart is a Kabi Kabi and Jinibara Country (Caloundra) based Artist, and his work references a mix of botanical motifs, found marks and surface textures in both natural and artificial colour scapes, to create a language that reflects the contemporary Australian landscape.Thom uses a mix of traditional and urban painting approaches and print-making and drawing techniques to create meaningful work with an inherent underlying visual beauty. His large-scale murals extend and abstract visuals are uncovered in his studio practice. The references to the semi-abstract scapes of natural and built environments often echo the surrounding spaces, creating a dialogue between project and place.
