The dominant 80s & 90s UK genre 'Street Soul' is having a real moment of late, and Heels & Souls continue to contribute with this standalone album from Secret Touch. 29 years on, this largely forgotten album is as warm as ever, full of lo-fi charm, unashamedly positive messages and a nice mix of low-slung grooves and upbeat shufflers. Re-issue of 1998 West-Coast hip-hop classic! As Quik explains, “the name Rhythm-Al-Ism alone tells you what I was doing. I was mixing up rhythms. I was meshing R&B with hip-hop and jazz. And a little bit of comedy”. Quik's signature gangsta meets George Clinton sound defined a place and an era and he sounds as buttery on the mic and behind the decks all these years later. Necessary for the heads!

Australia's own Left Ear Records have selected two gorgeous cuts to represent mysterious Sydney singer Justine from her unreleased 1979 album. Tinges of disco and soul grace the breezy A side, and on the flip a building ten-minute groove, sounding like a funkier Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. A deep and special piece of Australian soul recording.
