Gary Abkin was born in northern California, and studied painting at the California Institute of the Arts and subsequently the San Francisco Art Institute where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. In 2003 he relocated from California to Queensland where he now resides.

The artist has exhibited at the Caloundra Regional Gallery, the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, Palma Rosa Art Gallery, the Churchie National Emerging Art Prize exhibition, The Third Quarter Gallery, and his work has toured throughout Queensland by Flying Arts Inc. as part of the Regional Art Award exhibition.
